Having attended Théodore Devilly and Charles Pêtre's classes at the Nancy School of Fine Art, Louis Majorelle was, in 1877, accepted at the Paris School of Fine Art, and frequented the studio of the sculptor, Aimé Millet. On his father's death, two years later, he was obliged to return to Nancy. With his brother he took over the family faience and furniture-making factory.
In 1894, Louis Majorelle replaced the factory's history-inspired Rococo and Japanese-style output with painted or varnished decoration, by designs using inlays inspired by naturalism and symbolism. Particularly well-known as a cabinet maker, Majorelle produced  luxury furniture made rue du Vieil Aître, Nancy.
He introduced metal working in his workshops to produce bronzes as furniture decoration and, in 1896 in collaboration with Daum, for use as lights.
His ceramics were made in various potteries throughout Lorraine. He also produced designs and models for earthenware objects for Alphonse Cytère (Rambervilliers) and the Mougin brothers.
His numerous activities led him to open a number of retail shops exhibiting his work, in particular in Paris, Lyons, and Oran.
In 1901 he became one of the Vice-Presidents of the Nancy School.
